INDONESIA - MARCH 11: President Sukarno (R) of Indonesia walks with the Major General Suharto (L) March 11, 1966 in Idonesia. Sukarno, was obliged (ordered) by the Indonesia Army to give Major General Suharto Supreme Authority to restore order after the Sept. 30, 1965 murders of six Generals, Army Chief Nation's bodyguard and daughter, accused by the army of being led by the Indonesia Communist Party, (the PKI). General Suharto, not of high enough rank to be on the hit list, took over leadership of the army. Between October 1965 and March 1966, under Suharto's command, thousands of suspected and known communists were killed and imprisoned throughout Indonesia. In March 1976, the Indonesian Parliament (The People's General Assembly) stripped President Sukarno of all powers and appointed General Suharto as Acting President.
